Gamma Sterilization - Sterility Verification
Dosimeters are used to measure and quantify the absorbed doses for use in the quality control of gamma radiation sterilization.
As ionizing radiation interacts with the dosimeters, a number of chemical
reactions are possible. It is important to ensure that the pallet receives a uniform amount of dosage and therefore it is crucial to identify
the minimum and maximum dose positions in order to effectively validate the sterility. As with ethylene oxide sterilization, biological indicators
can be used to validate the effectiveness of the sterilization process. After the sterilization process, the biological indicators
are placed in a culture medium specifically designed to promote growth of harmful bacteria. If it is observed that the indicators
have been killed and no further growth occurs, the product can be deemed sterile.
