Gamma Safety Considerations
A number of safety features are implemented at any Gamma Sterilization facility in order to protect workers, products and equipment.
Access to the irradiator cell is controlled through interlocks and mechanical gates. In addition, backup access controls are implemented
to prevent undetected entry into the cell.
If a door is open or barrier is broken, potentially unsafe areas are shut down by activating an Emergency Stop circuit.
If access to the area is required, a bypass switch is used to disable one of the light curtains through which an operator
may enter this area. Special procedures need to be followed in order to ensure personnel safety.
Additional safety features are also implemented to ensure personnel safety as well as ensure proper equipment operation.
Faults related to the irradiation cell will cause the source rack to retun to a safe position. Other faults remove motive power
to the material handling system in their respective zones.
